Physical Therapy and Other Alternative Therapies



Physical therapy mainly deals with injuries, disorders and disabilities. It is a medical profession that speeds up the recovery of those who have musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiopulmonary and geriatric injuries and programs.

Physical therapy focuses in restoring mobility, function and at the same time, reduce pain from any part of the body that experienced severe trauma. Physiotherapy is also another term used for physical therapy.

A physical therapist can be found in hospitals, outpatient clinics, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, schools, hospice facilities, research centers, athletic facilities and industrial clinics. Physical therapists can also work as educators and teachers in academic institutions.

Physical therapists maintain a strong coordination and communication with the patient’s physician. This is of course to inform the doctor about any development regarding the patient’s medical condition.

Early practitioners of physical therapy could be traced back to Hippocrates and Hector. They were practicing physical therapy through massage and hydrotherapy as early as 460 B.C. It’s practice as a medical profession started as early as 1894 with the nurses in Great Britain. Since then, it never looked back, continuing its improvement and development until the current century.

Physical therapy is actually another kind of alternative medication that most pain patients would turn to. Some patients due to fear of getting hooked into medicines and drugs refuse to take this kind of medication. That is why they turn to alternative medicine.

Here are several kinds of other therapy that most patients nowadays turn to:

1. Chinese acupuncture – this kind of mediation stimulates the flow of the patient’s chi. This chi naturally heals the body. According to Chinese history, this method of treatment is about 4000 years old. This kind of alternative treatment is being used in Chinese modern hospitals. It is also recognized by the World Health Organization.

2. Chiropractic care- it is also another alternative treatment. There are several studies conducted by the National Institutes of Health in the United States stating that chiropractic method was able to care several patients of back pain and other muscle strains.

3. Massage Therapy – massage is one of the natural way of healing. Actually, it is one of the oldest therapy method. It was used as early as 3000 B.C. that would be about 5000 years of documented success in healing. There are different kinds of massages like shiatsu, acupressure, osteopathy, reflexology and Swedish massage.

4. Music Therapy - this is not a modern thing. Plato has once said that music is instrumental to any person’s education. Albert Einstein actually played his violin when he is struggling with different and complicated formulas.

5. Water Therapy- this is again another simple and old technique of curing people’s illnesses. Water therapy improve blood circulation and also believed to have an effect on the cells. You could also increase the strength of your immune system by using therapy.

6. Yoga – this is a technique that has been practiced for 5000 years in India. It revolves around the person’s soul and spirit. This intends to connect the person’s subconscious to the universe.

Physical therapy is very effective in dealing with different problems concerned with joints, bones, muscles and also with neurological disorders. There are instances when people who have gotten used to the instructions given by the physical therapist, tend to perform the exercised unsupervised.

Doing this would defeat the purpose and the benefit of physical therapy. Supervision is important since this would inform us if are doing the exercises properly. This is important if we want to achieve the desired results and early recovery.
