Simple Guide When Buying Lilies

The best way to start growing lilies is to purchase the appropriate type that your space would allow. In the market, there are different varieties of lilies. They come in various shapes, sizes and colors and you have almost all a thousand and one types to choose from!

However, when buying lilies it is very important that you are somehow familiar with the plant because you might get confused when you are already out there. Before going on a “lily” shopping spree, it would be very helpful to conduct a simple research first. In the internet, there are lots of sites where you can get information on lilies.

While researching, you will know what are the types of lilies available, how to know if you are buying ‘true’ lilies, which types are ideal for starters, kinds suitable for indoor use, basic maintenance of lilies, and so much more. Once you have these set of basic information, you are ready to start your search for that perfect lily.

The major consideration when buying lilies is where you will place it. Ideally, lilies thrive so much better under direct sunlight. But, you can also keep these indoors for as long as your lilies have enough sun exposure, air, and moisture.

When purchasing lilies either for indoor or outdoor use, make sure that you select only those that are free of insects or any other pests. You can ensure that the plant is free from any pests by checking the undersides of the foliage and leaves for any possible signs of disease or insect. Make sure to buy lilies that look clean, well-potted, and with healthy foliages.

As much as possible, avoid lilies that have yellowish leaves, wilted foliages, brownish leaf margins, and those that bear spots and blotches. Check if the plant doesn’t have torn leaves or have been polished with a chemical to make it temporarily shine.

In buying lilies in pots or containers, try to look for those that have new flowers and leaf buds because they are usually of high quality.

After purchasing lilies, it would be better if you transport it in your space personally. This will ensure that you can take care of the lily because you now own it. Aside from that, you must be aware of the two seasons within the year that may damage the plant— the hot summer and the cold winter months.

When transporting lilies that you bought during summer, make sure to avoid placing it in a car with its windows shut because the temperatures may change, this sudden change in temperature can destroy the plant in no time. Also, make sure that you shade the lily plant from direct sun while it is inside the car.

Transporting lilies on winter months is more risky because of the invariable temperature. If it is unavoidable for you to transport the lilies during these months, make sure that you wrap it carefully before taking it out of the store. You can also wrap the lilies with a newspaper or thick paper bags to keep it safe.
