First, if you are going to do international travel, you need to look for information about the country that you are staying in through its embassy. You need to know what documents you need to bring and what trouble you may expect. You also need to know if you are required to have a visa, what to do and who to contact if your passport gets lost, and the address of your embassy or consulate in the area just in case something goes wrong. Some embassies will also have information on where you can get good information for travel and tours in their respective countries.

Second, talk to your travel agent about the tours that you want to have. You may not be able to get a lot of good deals on tours if you are on a last minute travel schedule, but you can still try. After all, your travel agent should be well versed in the troubles of travel, and your travel agent should be able to get you help regarding where you need to go and what you need to do in order to get around.

Third, never underestimate the importance of a map. You need to have a map of the area that you want to travel in, which you can usually find online. This can help you plan your itinerary out. You can even draw up your itinerary while you are on the plane or train to your destination! This way, you know where to go even before you get to the place. However, you still need to maintain some flexibility just in case things don't go the way that you plan. This means that you should be aware of any local festivals that might hold up traffic, or issues that might keep you from traveling safely or quickly to any place at your destination of choice.
