Sudoku is somehow similar with magic square which first appeared in France during the 19th century. The difference is, this puzzle used arithmetic to solve or complete it, while sudoku uses logic. It was first released in 1892. The Le Siecle’s rival paper refined the magic numbers until it became the current format of the puzzle.

Kakuro, meanwhile, is called or referred to as the mathematical transliteration of crosswords. It can also be called pr referred to Cross Sums or Cross Addition. The Japanese name kakuro comes from the shortened karan kurosu which literally means addition cross. In Japan, Kakuro was the second most popular puzzle after Sudoku and Nikoli.

There is combination puzzle of sudoku and kakuro, this is called “cross sums sudoku”. The clues are given as cross sums in a standard 9x9 sudoku grid.
